Julia is completing her final stage of training for a Master of Mental Health Counseling degree from Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU). She is also a Registered Dietitian with 30 years of experience in group and individual nutrition education and counseling. She is currently an Associate Professor of nutrition at Ithaca College since 2005.
Her primary approach to working with clients is humanistic – valuing a team approach between counselor and client and drawing on the client’s strengths and innate potential for growth and wisdom. She also utilizes a cognitive behavioral approach to assist clients in navigating the interactions between life circumstances, moods, thought patterns, physical health, and behaviors, and she employs motivational interviewing techniques to help clients define their own goals and motivation for change.
Julia has practiced Buddhist meditation since 1994 and she brings a strong mindfulness orientation to her practice of counseling, nutrition work, teaching, and daily life. In 2018, she became certified as a Mindfulness Meditation Instructor through the training program of Insight Meditation Society founders, Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach, and the UC Berkeley Greater Good Science Center. She has formally taught meditation at Ithaca College for a decade.
Outside of the workplace, Julia enjoys spending time with her family, friends, and dog – Scooter. She enjoys playing music – accordion, cooking, staying active, and is an avid cyclist who enjoys biking locally and traveling by bicycle.
