What Is Couples Therapy?

Couples therapy is a form of psychotherapy designed to help partners strengthen their relationship, resolve conflict, and reconnect in a supportive, structured environment. At MindWell, our therapists in New York and Vermont draw on evidence-based approaches — including Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the Gottman Method, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) — to guide couples through the process of improving communication, rebuilding trust, and deepening emotional connection. More than just conflict resolution, couples therapy helps partners gain a clearer understanding of their relationship dynamics and develop practical, lasting tools for navigating life together.

Highlights Of Supportive Initiatives Include:

What to Expect During Your Visit

Initial Couples Assessment

During your first visit, you and your partner will meet with a couples therapist for a comprehensive assessment. Together, you will discuss your relationship history, current challenges, and individual concerns in a supportive environment. Your therapist will help clarify your goals for therapy and begin to develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your unique needs and your goals for your relationship.

Individual Assessment

In the second and third sessions, each partner meets individually with the therapist. These one-on-one sessions give you space to share your own perspective, personal history, and goals for the relationship. Your therapist will explore the patterns and communication styles you each bring, along with your strengths and the areas you’d like to grow. What your therapist learns from each of you helps shape a plan for your work together going forward.

Feedback Session & Goal Setting

After your individual sessions, your therapist will share feedback from your assessment sessions, identifying strengths and areas for growth in your relationship. From there, you will begin developing and practicing healthier communication techniques and work together on specific challenges, using evidence based tools introduced by your therapist. Partners are encouraged to apply these skills between sessions to strengthen their connection and foster positive change.

Building Skills & Strengthening Connection

Following the feedback and goal setting setting, you and your partner will focus on reinforcing new skills and celebrating progress. The therapist will help you both set realistic goals for ongoing growth and discuss strategies to maintain improvements over time. This visit often includes planning for future sessions or identifying additional resources if needed.

Therapy Fees and Insurance
in New York and Vermont

MindWell is in network with Aetna Commercial plans for individual therapy, and most Aetna members pay only a copay (exact costs depend on your plan). We do not accept Medicare, Medicaid, or other plans administered through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. For all other commercial insurance, we work out of network, and we submit claims on your behalf so any reimbursement goes directly to you. Our Care Coordination team can also help verify your Aetna benefits before your first appointment.

Session fees vary based on provider, session length, and your individualized treatment plan. For the most current rate information, please visit our Insurance page or contact us directly. We’re happy to walk you through your options before your first appointment.
